YouTube Video Formats Explained

Choosing a format is mostly about balancing quality, file size, compatibility, and your legal right to save the media. This guide explains the common options in Clypixa without encouraging unauthorized copying.

MP4 for video downloads

MP4 is the most practical video format for everyday use. It plays on most phones, tablets, laptops, browsers, smart TVs, and editing programs. If you need both picture and sound, MP4 is usually the safest choice.

Clypixa offers MP4 choices by height, such as 720p or 1080p, when those qualities are available from the source video. The number describes the height of the video frame in pixels. Larger numbers usually mean sharper detail, but they also mean larger files and longer preparation times.

Resolution tradeoffs

A 2160p or 1440p file can be useful for your own high-resolution footage or a permitted project that needs detailed visuals. For normal viewing on a phone or laptop, 1080p or 720p is often a better balance. For quick reference, limited bandwidth, or older devices, 480p or 360p can be enough.

Higher resolution cannot add detail that was not present in the original upload. If the source video was uploaded at 720p, selecting a higher target will not turn it into a true 4K video.

MP3 and M4A for audio

MP3 is a widely supported audio format. It is useful when you have permission to save audio from your own upload, a lecture, a public-domain recording, or a creator-approved file. It is not a license to extract music or copyrighted audio without permission.

M4A is another audio option that can keep good quality at efficient file sizes. It works well in many modern players and phones. If you are unsure which audio format your device supports, MP3 is usually the more universal option.

Why available formats vary

YouTube does not expose the same set of formats for every video. Available options can depend on the original upload quality, processing status, length, codec support, region, and platform changes. If a specific quality is missing, choose the nearest available option that still fits your legitimate use case.

Pick the smallest format that does the job

Smaller files download faster, use less storage, and are easier to keep organized. For private reference, a moderate resolution is often enough. Save very high-resolution files for cases where the detail matters and you have a clear right to keep the video.

Legal reminder

Format choice does not change copyright status. Whether you choose MP4, MP3, or M4A, you are responsible for making sure the download is allowed by the creator, the license, YouTube's Terms of Service, and the law in your country.
